Red? Itchy? Burning? Just another day in the life when you have sensitive skin. Dozens of products later, and you're worse off than when you started! You ask yourself, will you ever find relief? Well, the answer is yes! Here are 5 tips sure to ease your skincare woes, and get you looking and feeling better than ever!
Use a low pH cleanser
Your skins' pH is important! The optimal pH of human skin is 5.5, so ideally you should use a cleanser with a pH of 5.5 as well, or at least one very close to it. You see, our skin has a protective layer called an acid mantle. This prevents bacteria, pollutants, and harmful substances from damaging our skin. By using a cleanser with a pH higher or lower than 5.5, you could be harming this layer, which could lead to a whole host of problems! One of which is sensitive, inflamed skin!
No more hot baths
As tempting as it may be to take a nice, hot shower, resist the urge! Hot water and the steam that accompanies it is terrible for sensitive skin. The heat will irritate and dry out your skin, leaving you a red, flaky mess. Instead, switch to lukewarm showers, as they are better tolerated. Your skin will thank you!
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
One of the leading causes of sensitive skin is dryness. To combat this, you should use a moisturizer, preferably one suited for sensitive skin. You should moisturize after washing your face to trap the moisture in. This will help keep your skin more hydrated.
Pay attention to ingredients lists
As a general rule, those with sensitive skin should look for products with short ingredients lists. You are less likely to have a reaction to them, since there are fewer ingredients that could be irritating. You should also avoid products with alcohol, fragrances, and mineral oil, all of which are common irritants for sensitive skin.
While consistent sunscreen use is beneficial to everyone, it is especially so for people with sensitive skin. Your condition makes you particularly susceptible to sun damage, which will exacerbate redness. Sunscreen is your friend! Invest in a good one with a SPF of 30 or more. The higher the SPF, the higher the protection!
