Lips: Matte vs Velvet
Posted on December 18 2018
From cute nudes to striking reds, we all love a good lip color. Luckily, we're not here to argue about colors (there are WAY too many variables to go on about that). We're here to talk about the lipstick types themselves. Specifically, we're posing the question: Matte or velvet?
In One Corner: Matte
First of all, let's clarify what a matte lipstick is. Matte lipsticks give off no shine or shimmer. Instead, they are very pigmented and bold, and can even make the lips look a little fuller! Mattes are meant to dry on your lips a few moments after application and stick it out for hours. Here's a tip: This drying effect can sometimes leave you a little chapped, so try moisturizing your lips with a balm first!
In The Other Corner: Velvet
Velvet lipstick is very different from matte. It's not even a lipstick, exactly, but a sort of a mix between lipstick and lip gloss. Although it doesn't last as long as a matte, velvet lipstick is lightweight, it goes on smooth, and it won't dry out your lips. Not only that, but it too can be rather pigmented. Unlike mattes, velvets offer a soft shine that some people prefer.
Although the velvet lip is comfortable, looks great, and won't dry you out, a matte lip is a fair contender! Its reputable boldness and long-lasting formula are definitely worth noting. Honestly, as it is with most things in the makeup world, it's a matter of personal preference! If you're going on a shopping trip to the mall or seeing a movie with some friends, a velvet lipstick might be more up your alley. However, if you're planning on wearing your look all day or all night, a matte lip would probably be the better choice.
